iPhone & Apple Watch Setup Guide

Everything you need to get ONESHOT running on your iPhone and Apple Watch, from first launch to calling for DOPE by voice without taking your eye off the scope. It covers every Siri command the app understands, what Siri asks back, and what each reply means.

Requirements

In short

ONESHOT Ballistics for iPhone is an offline ballistic calculator with Siri voice control. In Spotter Mode you say "Hey Siri, new target in OneShot", give the range, and Siri reads back the elevation and windage to dial. The solution stays on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. The Apple Watch app solves on the wrist, even with the iPhone out of range. Siri features need iOS 17 or later; the watch app needs watchOS 10 or later.

Quick start

Allow about ten minutes, at home, before you go to the range. Tick each step off as you go; your progress is saved in this browser.

  1. Install ONESHOT on your iPhone Coming soon

    The iOS app isn't on the App Store yet. When it launches, search for OneShot Ballistics in the App Store and install it. The Apple Watch app comes with it, so there's nothing separate to download.

    If it doesn't appear on your watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to My Watch, scroll to Available Apps and tap Install next to OneShot.

  2. Allow the permissions you need

    OneShot asks for each permission the first time a feature uses it. None of them are required to solve, but each one unlocks something:

    • Location Live atmospherics and wind for your position.
    • Motion Rifle cant and inclination angle.
    • Bluetooth Ballistic rangefinders and weather meters.
    • Camera & Photos Photographing targets for group size analysis.

    You can change any of these later in Settings → OneShot (on iOS 18 and later: Settings → Apps → OneShot).

  3. Build a rifle profile and select it

    Enter the rifle, optic, and load, including zero distance, sight height, twist, bullet, BC, and muzzle velocity. Then make it the active profile. Siri and the watch always solve for the active profile unless you name another one.

    Name profiles so they're easy to say. "Three oh eight" or "Tikka six five" is easier for Siri than "T3x-CTR 6.5CM 143ELDX #2".

  4. Set your units

    Choose distance (metres or yards), adjustment (MIL, MOA, IPHY, or cm/100 m), and wind speed units in the app. Every number you say to Siri uses these units. You never say "metres" or "mils" out loud; "five hundred" means 500 of whatever distance unit you've set.

  5. Turn on Siri and Live Activities

    See Turn on Siri below for the exact switches.

  6. Sync your watch

    With your watch on and near your iPhone, open OneShot on the iPhone once. Your active profile and units are sent to the watch and saved there, so the watch can solve later even if the iPhone is out of range or switched off.

    Do this again whenever you change the profile, load, or units.

  7. Test it at home

    Say Hey Siri, start Spotter Mode in OneShot, then Hey Siri, new target in OneShot. When Siri asks "What range?", answer three hundred. You should hear the dope read back and see it on your Lock Screen.

Turn on Siri

Every voice command runs in the background. OneShot does not open, and the screen stays off. These switches need to be on first:

  1. Settings → Siri (older iOS: Siri & Search)
  2. Turn on Listen for "Siri" or "Hey Siri"
  3. Turn on Allow Siri When Locked, so the phone can stay in your pocket

iPhone

OneShot + Siri

  1. Settings → Apps → OneShot → Siri (older iOS: Settings → OneShot → Siri & Search)
  2. Make sure Use with Ask Siri is on
  3. On the same screen, turn on Live Activities

Apple Watch

Siri on the wrist

  1. On the watch: Settings → Siri
  2. Turn on Listen for "Hey Siri" and/or Raise to Speak
  3. Raise to Speak is the quietest option. Lift your wrist and talk.

Open OneShot once after installing or updating

iOS registers the voice commands the first time the app runs. To check they're there, open the Shortcuts app and look for OneShot under App Shortcuts. You should see Start Spotter Mode, Update DOPE, Set Wind, and End Spotter Mode.

Spotter Mode: hands-free DOPE

Spotter Mode is the iPhone's hands-free loop. You ask for a solution, Siri reads it back, and it stays pinned to your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. A typical string of fire goes like this:

    Siri always asks for the range separately. iOS doesn't let a number be part of the command itself, so you can't say "new target at 550" in one go.

    Set Wind keeps the last range, so you don't repeat the target. Use it between shots as the wind changes.

    This clears the Live Activity. You can also tap End on the Live Activity itself.

Reading the reply

Every reply is a correction to dial, not a bullet drop. "Up" and "right" mean turn the turrets up and right. Siri spells units out ("mils", "metres per second") because abbreviations are hard to hear through hearing protection. If the bullet goes subsonic before the target, the reply ends with Warning, subsonic at target.

Siri command library

Every phrase below is registered with Siri. Start each one with "Hey Siri," (or just press and hold the side button). Tap a phrase to copy it.

The one rule: always say the app name

Every command must include OneShot. Without it, Siri can't tell the request is for OneShot and won't run it. On iPhone, Siri also accepts One Shot, OneShot Ballistics, and Spotter in place of "OneShot". On Apple Watch, say OneShot.

Starts a session with your active profile and puts it on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. Say this before any DOPE or wind command.

Update DOPE for a named rifle

Same as Update DOPE, but solves for a specific profile. Replace [rifle profile] with the profile's name as you saved it in the app. Close is fine; Siri matches the nearest name.

Getting Siri to hear you the first time

  • Use the short forms at the rifle. "OneShot dope" and "OneShot wind" are the most reliable phrases. Siri gets less accurate on long sentences.
  • Answer the follow-up with just the number. "Five fifty" or "five hundred and fifty" both work. Don't add units.
  • If Siri mishears the app name, say it as two words: "One Shot".
  • Speak before the shot, not after. Muzzle blast right after a command can cut Siri off before it hears the range.

Wind direction vocabulary

OneShot understands wind direction in the ways shooters call it. Use these words when you set a wind direction in a custom shortcut. Clock positions are relative to you facing the target, with 12 o'clock downrange. Compass directions are absolute. Either way, the direction is where the wind is coming from.

Siri repeats the direction back ("from 3 o'clock", "from northwest"), so you can catch it if it heard you wrong.

Custom shortcuts & one-press starts

The voice commands only ask for range or wind speed. To set a wind direction, fix a profile, or trigger OneShot without speaking, build your own shortcut. It takes two minutes.

Recipe

A "full value right" call

  1. Open Shortcuts and tap +
  2. Add Action, search OneShot, choose Update DOPE
  3. Tap Range and choose Ask Each Time
  4. Expand the action and set Wind direction to 3 o'clock. Optionally set Wind speed and Rifle profile.
  5. Name the shortcut something short, like Right wind

Now Hey Siri, right wind asks for the range and solves with a 3 o'clock wind.

iPhone 15 Pro and later

Action Button

  1. Settings → Action Button
  2. Swipe to Shortcut and choose Start Spotter Mode (under OneShot) or your custom shortcut

One press starts a session. There's currently no Start button inside the app, so this is the fastest way to start without speaking.

Any iPhone

Back Tap

  1. Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap
  2. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap and pick a OneShot shortcut

Handy for starting Spotter Mode, or for a set range you shoot often.

Live Activity & widgets

Live Activity

While Spotter Mode is on, your current range, elevation, and windage stay on the Lock Screen and, on iPhone 14 Pro or newer, in the Dynamic Island. They update every time you ask Siri for new DOPE or wind.

  • Long-press the Dynamic Island to expand it.
  • Tap End on the Live Activity to finish the session without Siri.
  • A dimmed solution is more than 10 minutes old. Conditions may have changed, so ask for fresh DOPE before you trust it.

Last DOPE widget

Shows the most recent Spotter Mode solution, so you can check it without unlocking.

  • Home Screen: long-press an empty spot, tap Edit → Add Widget, search OneShot, and choose small, medium, or large.
  • Lock Screen: long-press the Lock Screen, tap Customize → Lock Screen, then tap the widget area and add Last DOPE (rectangular, circular, or the inline line above the clock).

Apple Watch

The watch is a full solver on your wrist. It follows the iPhone when the iPhone is nearby, and it keeps solving by itself when the iPhone is out of range, flat, or left in the vehicle.

Reading the screen

Target distance and inclination (always in degrees).
ELEVATION · WINDAGE
What to dial. Arrows show the direction. A dash (—) means there's no solution yet. The watch never shows a guessed 0.00.
WIND · TEMP
Wind speed and clock direction, and air temperature from the iPhone.
Footer
The rifle, bullet weight, and muzzle velocity the dope is for. NO PROFILE means nothing has synced yet.

Controls

iPhone nearby, or not

iPhone connected

The iPhone solves with live atmospherics and sends the result to the watch. Crown changes go back to the iPhone, which re-solves, so both always show the same numbers.

ON WATCH

If the iPhone hasn't sent a fresh solution in the last 15 seconds, the watch solves on its own using the last synced profile and conditions. The amber ON WATCH badge tells you there are no live atmospherics behind the number.

Watch the temperature

If TEMP turns grey, the reading is more than 30 minutes old. Neither the watch nor the iPhone has a thermometer, and a 10° error moves density altitude by roughly a thousand feet. Bring the iPhone back in range, or open OneShot on it, to refresh.

What Siri says, and what to do

OneShot never reads out a guessed solution. When something is missing, Siri tells you. Here is every message and the fix.

Troubleshooting

Siri opens the app, or says it can't help, instead of running the command
  • Make sure you said OneShot (or "One Shot") in the phrase. Every command needs it.
  • Open OneShot once. iOS registers the commands on first launch and after each update.
  • Check Settings → Apps → OneShot → Siri and turn on Use with Ask Siri.
  • Check the Shortcuts app. OneShot should be listed under App Shortcuts. If it isn't, restart the iPhone.
  • You need iOS 17 or later for voice commands.
Can I say the range in the same sentence, like "new target at 500"?

No. iOS doesn't allow a free number inside an App Shortcut phrase, so Siri always asks "What range?" as a follow-up. Answer with just the number. The follow-up only adds about a second.

Where's the Start Spotter Mode button in the app?

Right now Spotter Mode starts by voice or from the Shortcuts app. For one-press starts, put Start Spotter Mode on the Action Button or Back Tap.

The Live Activity doesn't appear
  • Turn on Live Activities in Settings → Apps → OneShot.
  • Start a session first. The Live Activity only exists while Spotter Mode is on.
  • The Dynamic Island is only on iPhone 14 Pro and newer. Other models show the activity on the Lock Screen.
The watch shows dashes (—) or NO PROFILE

Nothing has synced yet. Keep the watch on your wrist with Bluetooth on, and open OneShot on the iPhone. The profile arrives within a few seconds and stays on the watch after that.

The watch and iPhone show different numbers

For a moment while you're turning the crown, the watch shows its own solution first. The iPhone's answer takes over when it arrives. If the watch shows ON WATCH for a long time, the iPhone isn't reachable. Check Bluetooth and that the iPhone isn't in Airplane Mode.

Siri answers in the wrong units

Voice commands follow the units set in the app. Change distance, angle, or wind speed units in OneShot on the iPhone, then open the app with the watch nearby so the watch picks them up too.

Does Siri work in Afrikaans?

No. Siri doesn't support Afrikaans, so the voice commands are in English. They work with the iPhone set to English (South Africa), English (UK), or English (US).

Does any of this need signal?

No. Solving always happens on the device. Signal is only used to fetch live wind and weather for your location. Offline, OneShot uses your last known conditions and tells you it did. The watch solves with no iPhone and no signal at all.
